Botanical garden with luxurious stained glass in Mexico
Toluca de Lerdo is a large Mexican city. One of its main attractions – the Cosmovitral, walls and ceiling of which is decorated with magnificent stained glass Windows. The author of the project – Leopoldo Flores (Leopoldo Flores), a local artist who in 1975 became the initiator of creation of this architectural masterpiece.
The Botanical garden was built in the late 20th century, the building previously occupied by the Central market. After the market closes Leopoldo Flores appealed to the government to preserve the historical appearance of the city and not to destroy the room. He persuaded the government to invest in the refurbishment of a covered pavilion in the Botanical garden, which housed works of stained glass. Its the brainchild of an artist named Cosmovitral, a neologism, which combines the Spanish words for "cosmos" and "glass."
To place a "painting glass", had to strengthen the walls of the building, it took about 75 tons of rebar. The creation of stained glass were spent 45 tons of blown glass and 25 tons of lead. Today the halls of the Botanical garden is decorated with huge frescoes and mosaics, they were assembled from more than half a million colorful pieces. The Central stained glass window (it is called the "Hombre Sol", which means "Man-sun") shows a man, born from the flames. Stained glass symbolically reveals the harmonic relationship of a human with heaven, also it is believed to be the personification of the vernal equinox. This work became so popular that it became one of the symbols of Toluca.
In addition to stained glass Windows, a Botanical garden as well as it can see more than 500 plants brought from different parts of the world. Every year it attracts thousands of visitors, but they are all Mexicans. Unfortunately, the Cosmovitral is virtually unknown outside the country, so that foreigners have yet to discover the amazing stained glass, collected on the initiative of artist Leopoldo Flores.
By the way, the Cosmovitral is not the only Botanical garden in the world, which turned into a Museum, similar experiments were also conducted earlier in Richmond.
