Australia wants to burn space junk with lasers
The Australian government is developing a weapon against the cloud of space junk surrounding our planet, to avoid accidents, shown in the Hollywood hit "gravity". Scientists are working on a laser gun, which will track space debris and push it out of orbit to burn up in the Earth's atmosphere, writes NewScientist.com.
Remote Australia is dependent on satellite communications and television more than other regions, so the government pays the protection of satellites special attention. It is known that space debris is very dangerous for aircraft and spacecraft – from satellites to space stations and shuttles. When the debris particles collide, they break up into smaller fragments, which move with greater speed. They are much harder to destroy from the Ground.
The new science centre in Canberra, the state will pay 20 million Australian dollars. the centre will keep track of the most massive objects from the trash ring and to study their orbits. Subsequently, the laser system mounted on the ground, will push the debris orbit and cause it to surrender to the will of the earth.
