In France built robust cardboard bridge

Architect Shigeru Ban built a bridge across the French river Gardon of cardboard. The eco-building was surprisingly strong: for six weeks, the bridge can withstand up to 20 people at a time, according to Inhabitat. Part of the bridge was made from recycled paper and plastic. Overall it is built with 281 cardboard tubes, and the equilibrium structure kept by foundations made from wooden boxes filled with sand.

Ban said that he wanted to expand the possibilities of paper as a building material and to show that cardboard can be very strong and durable. "We must get rid of prejudices about the paper," he said. The bridge was opened for visitors for six weeks, after which it was dismantled in connection with the beginning of the rainy season.
