8 stages of the device of a magnificent hedge

April is the optimal time to lay a hedge in the conditions of the middle strip of Russia. And in order for this spectacular element of the country landscape to successfully fulfill its tasks, you need to adhere to some rules.

Rule 1: Don’t let the roots dry. When planting plants with an open root system, it is impossible to allow the roots to dry out. Therefore, excavated or acquired plants before planting must be placed in a plastic bag with wet sawdust and tightly tie it above the level of the root system.

Rule 2: Cut the roots before planting. Immediately before planting, the roots of plants should be carefully examined; dry tips should be pruned, be sure to remove damaged parts. When planting, the root system must be straightened.

Rule 3: Use clay chatter. In order for transplanted plants to take root better, their roots are dipped in a chatter of soft clay and mullet. How to make it and use it correctly, read in article 15 of the most common mistakes when planting plants, where this question is devoted to paragraph 10 (but you should not ignore the rest either).

Rule 4: Consider the characteristics of the breed. The density of planting plants depends on their biological characteristics, the type and height of the hedge, the number of rows. Shadow-tolerant, slow-growing breeds and plants with a narrow crown are planted more densely than breeds of rapid growth, light-loving, with a wide crown.

A thicker fit can be applied in molded hedges, while in a free-growing hedge it should not be too dense. Trees and shrubs will grow, so that they do not crowd out each other. And to decorate the space between young plants, you can use pilots or fast-growing herbaceous perennials.

Rule 5: Keep distance. It is important to adhere to the recommended distances between plants in hedges during single-row and multi-row plantings. It is necessary to remember: in a multi-row hedge, plants should be placed in a chessboard order.

  • Type of fence: walls molded
Distance between plants in a row: 0.8-1.2 m
Row spacing: up to 1.0 m

  • Type of fence: walls freely growing
Distance between plants in a row: 1.0-2.0 m
Row distance: up to 2.0-3.0 m

  • Type of fence: hedges formed
Distance between plants in a row: 0.4-0.6 m
Row distance: 0.6-0.8 m

  • Type of hedge: hedges freely growing
Distance between plants in a row: 0.8-1.0 m
Row distance: 1.0-1.5 m

  • Type of fence: curbs molded
Distance between plants in a row: 0.2-0.3 m
Row distance: 0.3-0.4 m

  • Type of fence: curbs freely growing
Distance between plants in a row: up to 0.5 m.
Distance between rows: 0.5-0.6 m.

Rule 6: water and mulch. The soil around planted plants should be well compacted, watered and mulched with sawdust, crushed bark or peat to reduce evaporation of moisture and restrain the development of weeds.

Rule 7: Cut the plants. Plants thrive better if pruned after planting. This is done at one height from the surface of the earth along a strained cord, as well as from the sides at 1/3 or 1/2 of the average escape length. Note: if the planting is used material not formed specifically for the hedge, planted plants must be cut to a height of 20-30 cm from the ground.

Rule 8: Choose a direction If the main purpose of a future hedge is protection from winds, the rows of plants during planting are perpendicular to their direction.
