The longer the child sits in front of the TV, the worse his success

A new study confirms that the restriction of the time spent by children in front of their computers gives positive results. Issledovateli from Iowa State University found that children learn better, behave better, sleep more and are less sick, if the parents limit the time kids spend in front of the computer or TV. The results of the study were published in the scientific journal JAMA Pediatrics.

According to the author of the study, Professor Douglas gently, the effect of the restrictions of TV viewing and computer does not appear immediately, but over time. Therefore, parents can be difficult to recognize it.

Often, many moms and dads start to think: do not waste your own hand at keeping track of time that a child spends in front of the screen and limit it. However, they are wrong.

“It is likely that parents will not notice a positive effect, because it will become noticeable only 7 months later. Suppose a child is sitting in front of a screen more than 40 hours in a week, not counting the computer at school. Here, even small changes can play a decisive role. This does not mean you have to ban the computer and TV. Need to find a healthy balance.”, — the scientist believes.

During this study, the researchers analyzed data from 1300 school children and concluded: children of parents who limit the time in front of the screen, more sleep, they reduced the risk of obesity. And after 7 months they begin to behave better, less aggressive.

Parents notice how a child changes every day

“We parents see our child every day and don't usually notice how our child grows, and this is a very noticeable change. As for the media, there is another factor. As parents, we see not the absence of problems, and their appearance. But even if we notice changes in the child, we can't always trace how it changes over time. One thing is clear: if time in front of the TV increases, success in school is reduced. But it's not happening in one day. Generally speaking, if today I have long watched TV, it does not mean that the very next day I get two”, — the expert believes.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children from two years spent no more than 2 hours a day in front of the TV. In reality, however, kids watch TV a lot more. Therefore, scientists hope that this topic will raise pediatricians during communication with parents. “If doctors can convince even 10 percent of parents, millions of children will be healthier” — said the scientist.
