Triclosan in soap and cosmetics contributes to breast cancer

The researchers found that triclosan, as well as another substance called op, contributed to the growth of breast cancer cells in mice.

Dr. Kyul-Chul Choi notes that a role in the development of breast cancer has played a hormonal imbalance. Given that the test substance disrupts the endocrine system, the researchers suggest triclosan and similar compounds act as hormones, stimulating the growth of cancer cells. Early observations have shown that triclosan and op accumulated in the environment and are present in the urine of 75% of Americans.

In tests on cancer cells of the mammary gland in humans and laboratory mice, the scientists found that both agents interfered with genes associated with the growth of breast cancer cells, resulting in cancer cells. Mice that were exposed to the two compounds, had a large and dense breast tumors, compared to rodents from the control group. Choi explained: "Although the doses were somewhat high, we did this intentionally to mimic the effects of daily exposure to, and accumulation in the body due to prolonged use," said Choi. "Thus, the impact of triclosan and op may significantly increase the risk of breast cancer development and adversely affect human health".

Recall, triclosan is an antimicrobial ingredient in many products, including Soaps, cosmetics and cutting boards. The op is used in some types of paints, pesticides and plastics.
