Studies of brown fat in the human body using MRI could be an important milestone in the fight against obesity and diabetes.
Researchers at the Medical school of Warwick Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to detect and confirm the presence of brown adipose tissue in adult organism. Brown fat has become a hot topic for scientists due its ability to use energy and burn calories, helping to keep weight under control. Understanding brown adipose tissue, how it can be used for these purposes can help people suffering from obesity or with a high risk of developing diabetes.
Dr. Thomas Barber explained: "This is an exciting area of research which requires further research and discovery. The potential for us to develop safe and effective ways of activating brown fat to promote weight loss and increase energy expenditure — but we need more data to be able to get to this point". Barber added, "the MRI allows us to distinguish between the brown fat, and the more well-known white fat that people associate with weight gain. We may use the scanning order to emphasize the "zone of interest" that can help us build a picture of where the brown fat is".
