The idea of creating its own solar power plant belongs to the organizations Friends of Earth Spain and Ecooo, which helped the population of Sistan to switch to clean energy. In order to abandon traditional sources of energy that pollute the environment, anyone in the community had to invest 100 euros per share in the project, which allowed them to become co-owners and profit from the project. Ecooo has also helped install and maintain solar panels for private homes.

But switching to clean energy isn’t the only motivation to join one of these communities. The combination of high unemployment and rising electricity prices has left Spain with 47 million people struggling to pay for electricity. Such “green” communities can influence energy companies to lower electricity prices in the future. Some communities have even begun to produce energy themselves. An example of this is Zencer, which for several years offers anyone an alternative solution to the need for electricity.
