An unexpected encounter between lion cubs and a crocodile in South Africa
These wonderful photos were taken by wildlife photographer Kathleen Reeder, who came to Ukutula Lion Park in South Africa, hoping that she could meet the lion family and capture some unusual footage from their lives.

According to the woman, she was very lucky and at the beginning of the day she met several young lions who came to the watering hole to refresh themselves. But suddenly a small crocodile jumped out of the water and scared the inexperienced lion cubs.
“The lion cubs were already drinking when a crocodile jumped out of the water,” Kathleen recalls. And although the reptile was small, but very scared the young lions, clicking its dangerous jaws right in front of their faces.
“The lion cubs had time to react and bounced back, and the hungry crocodile, realizing that he was not shining here, disappeared under the water,” said the 56-year-old photographer, who came to South Africa from Phoenix, Arizona. The sight was really exciting! And most importantly, I managed to capture the whole incident on camera.
The lion cubs, although still young, roared at the brazen reptile as real adult predators. The best thing they could do at that point was to jump away from her, which they did. Although the lion cubs were not injured, they decided not to approach the dangerous place.
According to the American, when the reptile suddenly jumped out of the water, not only the lion cubs were afraid, but also she herself. Even when you realize that something could happen, you still get scared. And it is quite natural that I too experienced a scare, — said the woman.
- But to get good shots, I had to pull myself together and focus solely on shooting. Now I remember everything that happened as a real adventure that will remain in my memory for a lifetime.
Kathleen Reeder was in Ukutula Park with the rangers, who know the place well. They led the photographer to the pond near which these two-year-old lion cubs gathered. “In Ukutula, you may be offered a walk with the lions,” says Ms. Reader.
- In my opinion, this is a wonderful experience and a great opportunity to get to know these gorgeous big cats. The crocodile that scared the lion cubs was named Sparkley. He was named after one of the guides of Ukutula Lion Park.
