Sausages and ham every day —the risk of dying from heart failure

The results of the Swedish studies show that men who regularly eat foods from processed meat increase the risk of heart failure.

According to scientists, sausage, and ham every day increase in two times the chances of dying from heart failure, compared with men who rarely consume processed meat. However, the usual steak does not increase the risk. Experts suspect that a major factor is the salt and other chemicals that increase blood pressure.

The study analyzed data from more than 37 thousand men aged 45-79 years. Those who ate more than 75 grams of processed meat a day were 24 percent more likely to develop heart failure and twice were more likely to die compared to those who ate these products very little.Professor Alicia Volk from the Karolinska Institute said: "the High consumption of processed meat may increase the risk of heart failure. It usually contains sodium, nitrates, phosphates and other food additives, cured meats and grilled meats contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which can lead to corresponding increases cardiac risk. Unprocessed meat is free from food additives and usually has the least amount of sodium".
