Bionic pancreas successfully tested
The latest version of an artificial pancreas has been successfully tested in two five-day trials in adults and adolescents.
A team of researchers from Boston University and Massachusetts General hospital reported that the device is able to control the level of blood sugar in patients with type 1 diabetes. Dr. Edward Damiano said: "In both studies, a new device far exceeded our expectations, from the point of view of its ability to regulate glucose, predotvratit hypoglycemia and automatically adapt to different needs of adults — some of whom were very sensitive to insulin, and adolescents, who typically need more individual and high doses of drugs".
Another developer, Dr. Firas El-Khatib added: "One of the key advantages of this device is its ability to start controlling the blood sugar instantly, based only on the patient's weight, and continually adapt the decisions regarding doses of insulin and glucagon, to handle a wide range of requirements for dispensing".
Along with improvement software which allows the device to adapt to a wide individual needs dosage, the new version also relies on improved hardware, including a smartphone (iPhone 4S) capable of controlling wireless two pumps deliver doses of insulin and glucagon.
