Scientists made biofuel from coffee beans

Researchers from the University of Bath said that coffee grounds can be a sustainable fuel source for vehicles.

Scientists claim: of the 10 kilograms of waste can produce 2 liters of biofuel. For the production of "green" gasoline, developers used ground coffee from 20 different regions of the world, with caffeine and without. The researchers found that different varieties – Arabica and Robusta, have a uniform composition and physical properties for use as fuel. At the beginning of the technological process milled grain soaked in a special solvent and extracted oil. Then a process called transesterification converts it into biodiesel fuel.

Researcher Chris Chuck says that coffee grounds have great potential for use as fuel for cars. PhD student Rhodri Jenkins: "According to our estimates, a small cafe will produce around 10kg of coffee waste per day, which can be used to produce around two litres of biofuel".
