Budapest short-billed tourman

Some consider him the most beautiful pigeon in the world, others wonder how unsympathetic he looks.

But one thing can be said – this is not the case when an ugly duckling eventually turns into a beautiful swan. A descendant of the usual gray pigeon, the Budapest short-billed tourman was bred mainly for decorative purposes, and the awkward-looking chicks almost remain the same, with age only growing a few feathers.

About a century and a half ago, Hungary began to work on the creation of a breed of so-called high-flying pigeons, and in 1907 the Budapest short-billed tourman appeared in the capital.

Its feature was huge round eyes, with smooth and wide circumocular rings protruding on the sides of the head and similar to two large hemispheres, as well as a short straight beak.

The common name Budapest short-billed tourman unites several varieties of pigeons: Budapest short-billed stork, actually Budapest short-billed tourman Ibuda short-billed tourman. Depending on this, birds can have a monochromatic color (white, yellow, black, red, pale, blue, silver) or saddle pattern with stripes on the wings.

Today, representatives of this breed of pigeons participate in competitions where only their appearance is evaluated. Although Budapest short-billed tourmen have not lost their ability to long and high flights.

They are among the breeds with the best flight qualities, and can stay in the air for up to five hours in a row.
