Electric racing car built by Dutch students
New electric racing car built at the University of Technology Delft (Netherlands). His appointment is a victory in the races of the student formula. The chances of success are quite high, given the low weight and high energy saturation of the racing electric car. For every kilogram of its weight, there is almost one horsepower of engines.
With a weight of only 149.2 kg, it is powered by four electric motors with a capacity of 37 hp, integrated into the wheels. “The wheel is like a wax, you’ll be surprised at how much it fits inside,” said Marine van der Meijs, the project’s chief engineer.
Lightweight design provides not only non-standard layout, but also an innovative sandwich structure chassis. According to designer Guido van Koppenhagen, it weighs no more than a box of beer.
Each of the four engines of the electric car weighs 4 kg, but develops a maximum power of 27 kW and torque up to 28 Nm.
The monocoque chassis is built from composite carbon fiber based on aluminum cells and brackets. Electronics, car control system and batteries developed by students independently.
Improved aerodynamics stimulates high maneuverability. Acceleration of an electric car to 100 km / h takes 2.3 seconds.
The car was designed and built by the DUT14 team of 80 students who joined together to compete in Formula Student competitions in the UK, Germany and Austria.
The university team has an impressive list of achievements. After winning the 2010 fossil fuel-powered cars, Delft dominates the electric division. For the past three years, the university has won races in Germany and twice won competitions in the UK, considered the most prestigious in the world of student formula.
The team currently ranks second in the world ranking. Its pilots own the world record for accelerating an electric car to 100 km / h - 2, 13 seconds.
Formula Student is an international competition formula for students from different countries who develop and build their own original designs with the support of famous automakers. At each race, cars are evaluated on a set of characteristics, including both technical indicators and economic efficiency. Winning races and position in the ranking depends on the maneuverability, performance and efficiency of the machines.
The 2014 races will take place in Silverstone (UK) on July 9-13, in Hackenheim (Germany) on July 29-August 3 and in Austria on the Red Bull ring on August 17-20.
