Preclinical testing of a new device for the control of conception will launch in the U.S. next year. The aim of the developers is to release the technology to the market by 2018. Miniature microchip 20 x 20 x 7 millimeters, is implanted under the human skin in the region of the buttocks, abdomen or upper arm. The working time of an implant is 16 years. A signal electric current from an internal battery device releases a dose of the hormone (30 micrograms a day of levonorgestrel), which prevents conception. To get pregnant, a woman is enough to take the remote and turn off the device.

As explained by the developers, "Accurate, long-term drug delivery is achieved through individual microreservoirs for sealed storage of the drug, microchip activation to release the drug, telemetry and control. This creates an opportunity for more accurate dosing, reduced costs and, ultimately, improving patient outcomes". As explained by the representative of MIT Robert Farra: "the Idea of using a thin membrane like an electric fuse was the most challenging and creative problem we had to solve." New technology can be adapted to various types of drugs.

The firm has already tested a radical system of delivery of drugs on patients with osteoporosis. The microchip is implanted using local anesthesia. Patient surveys from the study showed that the device was well tolerated. Surgeon Pia Georg Jensen, said: "Each procedure lasted less than 30 minutes. Patients could go home without an escort".
