Created the early warning system of heart failure

A new algorithm of the American researchers, is able to calculate the probability of cardiac arrest patients. Based on analysis the system takes data from medical records of patients. According to the magazine New Scientist, the system is able to warn in advance about the danger of cardiac arrest. A trigger system means for the patient at best 4 hours of life.

In American hospitals all the doctors and nurses practiced assessment of patients, and above all the risk of cardiac arrest or breathing, for subsequent intensive care, with the help of special cards with MEWS. In the cards of the MEWS indicates the frequency of the heartbeat, sistolicheskoe blood pressure, blood pressure and body temperature.

A new algorithm developed Sriram Somani from Carnegie-Mellon. He entered into the algorithm the data for 133 000 patients who underwent treatment at the hospital in Chicago hospitals during the period from 2006 to 2011. In total, these patients were called resuscitation 815 times. Algorithm Somani based on the analysis of 72 indicators from the medical history (i.e. age, number of platelets in the blood, glucose level and other parameters). As a result, he predicted the imminent heart failure in patients in 70% of cases. For comparison, the efficiency of the prediction of dangerous development of the situation in the MEWS is only 30%.

However, the algorithm Somani still needs more work – too often there are false positives (20% of cases). Scientist hopes to reduce the number of false positives by changing the algorithm of the new data and analysis of statistics from other hospitals.

The value of the new system was unanimously acknowledged by all scholars, therefore, the development of Comanche has every chance to receive good funding, including the state.
