Food intake affects the treatment of tuberculosis

According to new data from researchers at the University of Gadjah Mada (Indonesia), the timing of food intake in the early phase of tuberculosis treatment could have a negative impact on the efficiency of treatment of patients.
A new study presented at the Munich Congress of the European respiratory society, shows that eating food before taking the drugs from TB may lead to reduction of their effectiveness.
The researchers conducted a small study of 20 patients who had received TB treatment. They were given drugs: isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide and ethambutol. Drugs were administered by injection and orally.
The researchers then analyzed the blood of each participant. The results showed that in patients ' blood concentrations of isoniazid, rifampicin and pyrazinamide were the lowest, if supplementation took place simultaneously with the consumption of foods with a high content of carbohydrates, compared to drug intake on an empty stomach. This suggests that foods with a high carb diet before taking drugs makes them less effective.
Dr. Antonia Morita Iswari, "Because the study was conducted on the same people and the same environment, the only variable was the food. Therefore, we believe that food can affect the concentration of drugs in blood. The obtained results may have significant implications for clinical practice."
