The World Health Organization (WHO) gives disappointing statistics: despite the fact that TB medicines are known from the beginning of the twentieth century, every day from the disease kills more than 4, 5 thousand people. One-third of the world's population is infected with TB bacilli. This is mainly Asians reproductive age living in adverse social conditions: poor diet lowers the immune system, dampness and dirt in homes create optimal conditions for the growth of various bacteria, population density does not allow patients to isolate active TB.

On the other hand, the long history of coexistence of man and sticks Koch last learned to adapt to all kinds of medication effects, mutated to a form of multidrug-resistant (MDR-TB). It does not respond even to the most effective anti-TB drugs, with half of all cases of MDR-TB were three countries: India, China and Russia. Another mutant opened lately - TB extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB). It is even more difficult to treat.

Both of these forms can not be a standard six-month therapy, and require longer - over two years - and more toxic - 50-200 times - treatment. As a consequence, if the course of treatment for regular TB patient costs an average of $ 20, with an advanced form of MDR-- 250 times more expensive. In the case of XDR figure will be even higher. Hence the WHO fears that prob¬lemu tuberculosis in the coming years can not be resolved: the budgets of developing countries where the epidemic break out regularly, simply pull the treatment of all patients.

According to the WHO, the TB situation in Russia and the Ukraine is about the same as in the most densely populated and poorest countries of Asia are still a lot of people live below the poverty line does not improve and prisoners, and that the main categories of the population exposed to this disease. Every year in Russia are registered 117-120 thousand patients with tuberculosis, 25 million of them die each year. In Ukraine in 1995 it was declared a tuberculosis epidemic, and for the past 15 years the situation has worsened. Every day, the disease claims the lives of 30 people.

Photojournalist Maxim Dondyuk visited Ukraine in places where tubercular most - in the prison hospital, hospital, prison and TB clinic - to learn how to look death.
