Alessandro Moreschi – the only singer-castrato whose voice was recorded on the phonograph
Castration of boys at an early age with the aim of educating singers lasted until the second half of the 19th century. These boys didn't go through hormonal changes in puberty, so breaking voice they have occurred. This means that, as adults, they could perform the soprano roles (that is, kept the children's timbre).
In 1870, the Catholic Church forbade castration for the purpose of educating singers, and all remaining eunuchs Pope Leo XIII gathered under his wing in the choir of the Sistine chapel, so they could calmly live their lives (by the time these people became the objects of constant ridicule).
One of them was Alessandro Moreschi, who served in the choir for 30 years. In 1902 his voice was recorded on the phonograph, so that we can hear, sounded like the voice of a true castrato singer. By the time I made this recording, Moreschi was 44 years old and his voice has lost some of its charm, although according to other evidence, he is never very interesting singer and was not.
Mado Robin and her ”stratospheric” coloratura
This amazing French singer has taken one of the highest notes in the history of classical music – re the fourth octave, which corresponds to a frequency of 2300 Hz.
The last notes of this song sound like that... better remove the crystal in a safe place.
Florence foster Jenkins – the worst singer in the world
Florence Jenkins is a unique singer, who became famous thanks to... a complete and utter lack of musical hearing, sense of rhythm and generally any singing abilities. "It cackled and screamed, blew and vibrated," wrote critic Daniel Dixon. That, however, did not prevent her to consider herself a consummate singer.
The laughter of the audience during the concerts, Madame Jenkins was regarded solely as a manifestation of envy or ignorance.
Believe it or not, but this I may say the singer even managed to give a recital in Carnegie hall. And the excitement was such that all tickets were sold out several weeks before the concert.
It is amazing, but Florence was always surrounded by a crowd of fans, and not just do not know anything about the music of the youths – among them, for a moment, was the great Enrico Caruso. In General, to understand and believe her singing have to hear for yourself.
Interestingly, after the recording of this song (the first time without rehearsals!) Florence said to his engineer that all turned out just "perfect" and no second attempt is required. A piece that sounds on this record – Aria Queen of the Night Mozart.
Pope Leo XIII was the first Pope recorded on film (1903)
Pope Leo XIII was the first Pope, whose image was captured on film. He was 256 the Pope and ruled from 1878 to 1903.
Number stations
Signals, number stations (shortwave radio stations of unknown origin and of destination) heard almost all hams since the beginning of the First world war. Significantly nothing is known about them, however, many believe they coded espionage messages. Most often heard female voices (although there are male), transmitting sets of numbers, words or letters. Sometimes they seem completely arbitrary, and sometimes they present a certain system. In the 90-ies of the hams tracked some of the signals come from the American military base. The Federal communications Commission did not comment on anything.
