First aid if something is stuck in the throat - Heimlich

You need to know that. A life-saving technique. Various objects get stuck in the throat of people much more often than you can imagine: food, bone or anything else can get stuck in the airways and thereby slowly strangle a person. How to save a life with something stuck in your throat:

1. Consider how closed the airways are.

Partial blockage. If the victim makes sounds or coughs, this is very good. This means that his airway is not completely blocked. A cough is a protective reaction of the body to get rid of food or other objects stuck in the throat. Ask the victim to continue coughing until you see the stuck object, and then pull it out with your thumb and index finger.

Even if the object does not completely block the airways, you need to be alert so that it does not close them completely. If the victim is a child under the age of one, remember that when they cry and cough, it is a good sign.

Total blockage. The victim does not make any sounds, but is conscious. He can’t even cough because the object completely covers his airway. In this case, it is necessary to resort to the reception of Heimlich.

2. Reception Heimlich (for adults and children over a year old) Remember: the reception of Heimlich should be used only if the victim is more than a year old and he can not cough, talk, scream and, accordingly, breathe. If he does not receive prompt help, he will lose consciousness. In such a situation, it is very important to act quickly, while maintaining calm. There is nothing complicated about Heimlich’s reception:

Stand behind the victim if you are right-handed - a little to the left, if left-handed - a little to the right.

Take it firmly under your chest and tilt it forward slightly so that the object stuck in your throat moves outward rather than deeper inward.

Carefully but confidently hit the victim between the shoulder blades with the upper part of the wrist.

Check if the object has come out. If not, hit again, and so on up to five times.

If there is no result from the blows and the victim is still unable to breathe, squeeze your hand into a fist and place it between his navel and ribs. Place the other hand on top and press several times until the stuck object comes out. Please note that this technique can not be done with pregnant women, children under one year and overweight people.

If the object still interferes with breathing, call an ambulance. Do not leave the victim alone and until the arrival of doctors continue to use the reception Heimlich.

3. If your child is not coughing or crying, place your mouth down along your forearm or thigh so that your head has something to lean on.

Carefully hit him five times on the back with the top of the wrist. Then carefully examine the baby’s mouth and remove the object if you see it there. Do not try to get a stuck object by sticking your fingers in your child’s mouth, as this can push it deeper and make the situation worse.

If that doesn't help, turn the baby over on his back and gently press his chest five times. After each attempt, check if the stuck object has come out.

As you can see, there is nothing difficult in this technique, you just need to be calm and confident. Receiving Heimlich helps in most cases, and it is necessary to always remember it in order to be able to save a life.
