All you need is a twenty-four hour pause.
When the mind begins to sink into emotion, become conscious as soon as possible. Someone insulted you. It takes a little while for you to get angry, because that's the mechanism. You'll get angry, but after a pause.
Everything happens like a flash. At first you will feel offended. The moment you feel it, the second flow will begin: you will start to get angry.
At first anger will not be conscious; at first it will be like a fever. Then he'll become conscious. Then you will either begin to express it or suppress it.
So when I say “the sooner the better,” I mean that when someone insults you, be aware of that feeling as soon as you feel offended. And when you realize it, try to stop. Do not give in to automatic habit for a second.
Even one such stop will help a lot. A longer pause will help even more.
When Gurdjieff's father died, he called his son. He was only nine years old, and Gurdjieff remembered this for life. Dad called him. He was the youngest child, and he said, "I'm so poor, I can't give you anything, my boy." But I can give you what my father gave me. You may not be able to understand what that meant right now, because I couldn't understand what it meant when my father gave me that advice. But it turned out to be the most precious thing in my life, so I give it to you. Save him! Someday you may begin to understand it.
Gurdjieff was very attentive. My father said, When you feel angry, never answer in the first twenty-four hours. React, but let it be twenty-four hours.
Gurdjieff followed the advice of his dying father. He was deeply imprinted in his mind on the very day his father died, and Gurdjieff said, I practiced a lot of spiritual exercises, but it was the best. I've never been able to get angry in my life and it changed all of its direction, all of its flow, because I had to keep a promise.
When someone insulted me, I created a situation. I told this man that I would be back in twenty-four hours to answer, and I never answered because I knew it was useless to answer. ?
All I needed was a pause. And Gurdjieff's whole life changed. published
