Rotterdam is planning to build roads from recycled plastic
Asphalt is not the most useful coverage. He is responsible for the emissions of 27 kilos of CO2 for every tonne produced; it absorbs heat and contributes to the formation of the effect of the urban Islands (the area in the city, where the temperature is higher than outside). Meanwhile, our mountains of plastic are growing faster than they can be processed into various useful things.
It may not last too long. The Dutch construction company, VolkerWessels, offers a new form of a roadbed made from recycled plastic.
VolkerWessels published its plans to create a cover entirely made of recycled plastic which requires less maintenance than asphalt and can withstand large temperature changes between -40 and 80 ° C. Such roads can be laid within just a few weeks.
"Plastic roads easier, reduce the load on the ground, they are hollow, which makes easier the process of laying of cables and utility pipes below the surface. Section cover can be assembled at the plant and transported where they are needed, reducing time on-site installation, while a shorter construction period and low operational costs will mean less congestion caused by road works. Lighter materials also can be more effectively transported.
"Plastic offers all kinds of advantages compared to the current road construction, as in laying of roads and their maintenance," said Rolf Mars (Mars Rolf), Director of VolkerWessels.
Mars said that the draft PlasticRoad is still in the concept stage, but the company hopes to be able to present my first a road from fully recycled material for three years. Rotterdam, an active supporter of sustainable technologies have already shown their interest in this project.
"We have a very positive attitude to the development of PlasticRoad," says Jaap Peters (Jaap Peters), a representative of the engineering Bureau of the city Council. "Rotterdam is a city that is open to experimentation and innovative devices in practice. We have a "street lab", where such innovation can be tested".
Mars believes that the idea has great potential for further development, such as roads, heated or ultra-quiet surfaces. "As far as I know, we are the first in the world who tries this idea."
"At the moment the project is still on paper. The next step involves creating and testing in the laboratory to verify that its safe to use in wet weather, and the like. We are looking for partners who want to cooperate in a pilot project, as well as manufacturers in the plastics industry, we think about the refining sector, universities and other educational institutions. published
P. S. And remember, just changing your mind — together we change the world! ©
