The mystery of the Sumerian list of kings

Modern archaeology is replete with findings, the meaning and significance of which are still not solved and are unlikely to be realized in the near future. For example, the ancient Indian manuscripts, which described something similar to the ships to fly into near space or nuclear explosions. Or difficult to explain the drawings on the walls of Egyptian tombs. One of these enigmatic artifacts was and still is the so-called Sumerian list of kings.

Sumer is the first known to modern science highly developed human civilizations. Their city was located in the Tigris and Euphrates. Now the South of Iraq from Baghdad to the Persian Gulf.

It was found that by the third Millennium BC in the composition of the civilization of Sumer had at least 12 separate city-States: Kish, Uruk, Ur, Sippar, Akshak, Larak, Nippur, Adab, Umma, Lagash, bad-Tibira and Lars. And every city the population worshipped their gods. There were installed and dedicated temples.

A mysterious prism

Initially, as stated in the ancient sources, the power of the Sumerians belonged to the people. That is, they gave the world the prototype of the modern democracy. But then the Sumerians appeared Institute of the Imperial power. That's all that modern humanity knew about the Sumerians until 1906.

But in that year it was made a startling discovery — found "Royal list" of this ancient civilization. Or rather, a collection of ancient texts testifying to the fact that not everything we used to consider myths, is really the fiction.

The discovery was made by an American archaeologist of German origin Hermann Hilprecht. On the place where the ancient Sumerian city Nippur, scientist have found a partial list of rulers of the Sumerian Empire. This got to the topic of the Sumerians the interest of scientists from around the world.

After opening Hilprecht other researchers had found 18 artifacts containing partially or fully, the same text. The most significant finding in this direction was quadrangular ceramic prism with a height of about 20 centimeters, which is brought to light in 1922.

In the name of its discoverer, she called the Wealden of the Blundell prism. The experts found that the age of the clay of the manuscript — about 4 thousand years. All four faces of a prism filled with cuneiform script in two columns. In the center is a hole which was supposed to have inserted a wooden rod to the prism can be rotated and read each of the faces. The famous artifact is stored in the cuneiform collection of the Museum Ashmole in Oxford.

After all the inscriptions deciphered, it became clear that the list of rulers of Sumer includes not just a list of names. There has been described and the flood and salvation of Noah, and many other events known to us by the old Testament.

Scientists have concluded that the Wealden of the Blundell prism, and the remaining fragments of the cuneiform text is all the lists from some common source, which describes in detail the history of the civilization of the Sumerians.

The secrets of longevity

List of the rulers begins with prehistoric times and ends with the 14th ruler of the dynasty of ISIN (about 1763-1753 years BC). Of course, the greatest interest was aroused by the names of those kings who ruled Sumer before the flood (according to modern views, such a global catastrophe could really comprehend the planet around 8122 years BC).

The first thing that struck the scientists, the dates of the reign of each of the ancient rulers. Here are a few translated excerpts from cuneiform, adapted to modern language: "Alulim rules 28,800 years as king; Alalgar rules of 36,000 years — two kings ruled 64 800 years. Eridu was abandoned, (and) the throne was moved in bad Tibira".

In total, according to ancient sources, the kings of the antediluvian period, a total of 241 ruled for 200 years. Several circumstances have forced modern scholars to doubt the veracity of these records. First, the incredibly long reign of each of the kings. And secondly- that these characters are the heroes of the ancient Sumerian and Babylonian legends and epics.

Now, however, there are researchers who find the explanation of this fact. For example, there is a theory that these numbers are sort of hyperbole and Express the power of celebration or importance of the persons to which they belong.

For example, in Ancient Egypt, the phrase "He died aged 110 years" refers to those who have lived life fully and made an important contribution to society. The same thing could be ancient Sumerian kings. Such "terms" historians bestowed their rulers, for their boundless power and importance of what they were doing for the state.

By the way, here lies another mystery of the Sumerian "king list". The fact that after the flood, which is mentioned there as a real historical event, period of reign of the Sumerian kings began to decline, and the last of them has ruled for a very real "human" periods. A reasonable explanation for this, scientists have not yet found.

However, there is another hypothesis which explains the discrepancy of dates. It was launched in 1993 and lies in the fact that the Sumerians were committed by a different system of chronology, which has led to such fantastic terms. But again — it doesn't explain why "after the flood" become quite real. These circumstances are still waiting to be explored.

In accordance with Scripture

Another feature that makes the Sumerian lists are unique and extraordinarily valuable to modern science, is that they indirectly confirm the truth of the events described in the old Testament. For example, in the Book of Genesis tells about "the great flood" and the efforts of Noah to save the human race and animals — "pair of every creature".

In Sumerian cuneiform also mentioned that the Earth was the great flood which washed away many cities. And is referred to as the real, self-evident fact. Here's another quote from ancient sources, adapted to modern perceptions "(Total) in five cities, eight kings ruled 241 200 years. Then the flood washed away (country). After a flood washed away (country) and the Kingdom was sent down from heaven (a second time), Kish became the seat of the throne."

On the basis of Sumerian cuneiform, you can try to tentatively set the date of the biblical flood. If we compare the reign of the antediluvian dynasties and dates of construction of Sumerian cities, then you can come to the conclusion that "the water washed the earth away" about 12 thousand years before Christ.

In the sources of ancient civilization there are other coincidences with the old Testament. In particular, there is also mentioned "the first man" (the prototype of the biblical Adam) and tells of the sins which he has done, and this angered the gods. There is indirect mention of the sad story of Sodom and Gomorrah — cities that were destroyed by God for the sinfulness of their inhabitants.

However, it describes a slightly different punishment for sin. If the biblical Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by "fire of heaven", Sumerian sinners, killed and destroyed their city "beings descended from the mountains and not knowing mercy".

Of course, in the Sumerian lists, there can be no textual coincidences with the biblical text. It is clear — the Bible has been repeatedly translated, copied, corrected and supplemented. It's safe to say that its present text is very different from the real events that it describes.

But the important thing is that in the old Testament, and in the Sumerian "kings list" refers to the same well-recognizable episodes in the development of human civilization. That's what makes the findings of Hilprecht and his followers as significant for mankind.

In conclusion, I want to emphasize this. Scientists still disagree on whether the Sumerian lists are an accurate reflection of historical events or is it still a mixture of legends and real history. But as you know, science does not stand still. It is possible that in the future will be found other artifacts that complement or refute the Sumerian "kings list".published
