The separating chemicals from water

Recently, a new technique for selecting oils and other pollutants from water environment, which is the use of very readily available and cheap materials – definitely it will be a new word in the field of cleaning the environment from various pollutants.

This technology is the use of special developed material based on melamine sponges, which is a ultra-lightweight porous material that can easily be found in traditional, familiar to us domestic funds for care and cleaning. The researchers changed the properties of the melamine sponge in order that she “learned” to absorb oil and other substances, while repelling water.

Scientists loaded melamine sponge in a solution containing a small amount of silicon and hexane, which resulted in the purchase of the sponge some new and unique properties.

“The main reason for our joy and delight lies in the fact that we have created a technology that will allow to collect oils and various pollutants from aqueous environments, while not using expensive materials and tools – in fact, this technology can be applied at home!” according to Suresh Garimella, Executive Vice President, division of research and academic partnerships, who also holds the position of Professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University.

He suggests that such simple technology can even be used in extremely heavy and dangerous work, for example, with massive oil leaks, or leaks in industrial other pollutants.

One of the leaders of this research study, Sumei Chang, also holding a similar position and employed by the Professor Garimella, noted that they developed this technology while studying the properties of the obtained material on the basis of – they found that this material easily absorbs immiscible with water chemical pollutants. published
