"Kräuter Garten" — a vertical urban farm

Vertical urban farms will undoubtedly allow us to grow food more efficiently, thereby ensuring the freshest product on the shelves. A vertical farm in Germany, however, will be more local and offer a fresher product, because it will be made right in the store.

Farm Kräuter Garten" provided by the manufacturer INFARM will be installed in the shop METRO Cash & Carry. It is part of a pilot project in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain, which aims to show the production process of the products from inside, and hoped INFARM, will make a great contribution to the future where the city will be expected to provide themselves with products using similar technologies.

"We believe that our food system needs to be de-centralized and production should be closer to the consumer," says founder and CEO INFARM Galonska Erez (Erez Galonska). "It is very important from the point of view of environmental impact, as well as to greatly improve the safety and quality of our food."

Company INFARM was established in 2013, with funding from the EU and from private investors to develop the technology of vertical farming. Technology INFARM provides some sections mounted on each other, in which herbs and vegetables are grown using hydroponics, where a thin layer of water is enriched with nutrient and oxygen. It uses led lighting to simulate sunlight, the sensors monitor the internal environment, as well as the collection of data for the conditions necessary for good plant growth.

In addition to the ability to locally grow fresh produce all year round, the representative of the INFARM says that their technology of production of greens and vegetables uses 70 percent less fertilizer, compared with the conventional system, and 90 percent less water, and, of course, no pesticides. Production plant also does not occupy much space in the shop METRO, just 5kV.m.

According to INFARM, vertical farming technology allows to produce with much greater efficiency than any other product on the market today." Despite the apparent complexity, the system can monitor and control its functions via the app, allowing store employees to follow the installation. Ultimately, the company hopes that this simplicity will allow such a system to become popular for restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, hospitals and just for home use.

The system was installed in October last year, and the pilot project will last until October of this year. INFARM is planning to begin selling its technology in this or next year. published
