«Kräuter Garten» - a vertical urban farm

Vertical urban farm certainly possible to grow food more efficiently, thereby providing the freshest product on store shelves. Vertical farm in Germany, however, will be more local, and offer a fresh product, because it will be made right in the store.

Farm «Kräuter Garten», INFARM provided by the manufacturer, will be installed in the shop METRO Cash & amp; Carry. It is part of a pilot project in Berlin's Friedrichshain district, which aims to show the manufacturing process inside the products and how INFARM hopes will make a great contribution to the future, where the city will support themselves products using similar technology.

"We believe that our food system must be de-centralized production and should be closer to the consumer," says founder and CEO Erez INFARM Galonsky (Erez Galonska). "This is very important from the standpoint of environmental impact, as well as to significantly improve the safety and quality of our food».

INFARM company was founded in 2013, received funding from the EU and from private investors on the development of vertical farming technology. INFARM technology provides several sections mounted on each other, in which herbs and vegetables are grown using hydroponics, where the thin layer of water is enriched with oxygen and fertilizer. It uses LED lighting to simulate sunlight, microsensors monitor the internal environment, as well as the collection of data for the calculation of the conditions necessary for good plant growth.

In addition to the possibility of locally grown fresh produce all year round, the representative INFARM says that their technology and green vegetable production uses 70 percent less fertilizer as compared with the conventional system and up to 90 percent less water, and, of course, no pesticides. Production plant also does not take up much space in the shop METRO, all 5kv.m.

According INFARM, vertical farming technology allows you to "carry out production with much greater efficiency than any other product on the market today." Despite the apparent complexity, the system can monitor and control its functions via the application that allows store employees to monitor the installation. Ultimately, the company hopes that this simplicity would allow such a system to become popular for restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, hospitals and just for home use.

The system was installed in October last year, a pilot project will run until October this year. INFARM plans to start selling its technology in this or next year.
