John and Ann Betar. At 83 years old!

When John Betar was very young and peddled all sorts of things in the coastal towns of Connecticut, he fell in love with a local girl named Annie. Annie was 17 years old, and she was in the graduating class. In the morning, when she and her friends went to school, John dashing taxied on the car to get a ride with them.

America is still reeling from the great depression, and Annie's father wanted her to marry a solid man twenty years older, not some kid. But the young people were in love with and ran away to a nearby town, where he married.

It was 83 years ago.

Many years have passed, the world has changed beyond recognition, but John (he is now 104 years old) and Anne (she is 100) are still together. They have 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, and their marriage is officially recognized as "the longest in America." But the couple of Betar continue to take new frontiers: on Valentine's Day they answered questions about love and marriage posed to them via Twitter. It was easy, because people are always asking how they managed so long to live together, what they do and even what to eat.

Ann in its one hundred years cooks, cleans the house, reads a lot, watering the flowers and arrange family holidays which do not count. And John goes shopping (he still drives) and leads the family finances.

What for them was the good in life? To meet each other, they answer in unison. Just to be together.

An interesting twist in this family's history: during the First world the family of John fled to the United States from Syria. Father first moved overseas, I moved to the States and waited, when it will come to a wife and children, and John, who was ten years old, his little brother and mother were moved from one refugee camp to another. On the way, John's mother became ill and died, and finally in 1921, the friends helped the children to go to the father. John never forgot it. Today Ann and gather aid for those fleeing the war in Syria.

"Doors to refugees must be open. They were open to me! Imagine what would have happened if we were not let in? I wouldn't have met Annie..."published
