Photo of the year

World Press Photo Foundation was established in 1955 under the patronage of the Prince of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and is a unique platform for independent photojournalism and the free exchange of information.





The winner of the first World Press Photo Awards 2008 - "Photo of the Year" - named Tim Hetherington British photographer. On a photograph taken September 16, 2007, shows a US soldier resting in a bunker Restrepo, named in honor of the deceased before at the hands of rebel soldiers in his platoon. Second Airborne Battalion 503rd Infantry Division of the US Army stationed in the territory of the Korengal Valley in eastern Afghanistan. The picture is part of a photo essay commissioned by the magazine Vanity Fair.
