Robot and Man. From the content - to the form

A man is born gentle and weak, and die hard and solid. The strength and stiffness of the - companions of death i>.
Lao Tzu i>

Perhaps this indisputable truth guided by the initiators of the project Exo-Biote Jonathan Pepe and Julien Giler, the purpose of which was the creation of flexible robots that can perform movements with many degrees of freedom ... It is these robots, as the authors of the concept, in the future will be able to perfect "adapt" to a qualitatively new the level of communication with the man. We invite you to evaluate the first results of development and to express their views on the prospects of the project.

Breathe "life" in the original Dead artificially created material, giving it the ability to commit movements, such as those implemented in wildlife and, later, to use the opportunity to communicate with the person. That is the task set in front of the creators of the joint development of the Institute for Computer Science and the mechanical control, as well as the Center of Science and visual culture in the laboratory Imaginarium, with the active support of Neuflize Bank.

The ideal prototype design moving in intricate paths futuristic elements of the collection, as well as the mechanics of the movement became very nature. As a method for the implementation plan has been chosen 3D-printing technology using flexible soft materials.

In accordance with the idea of the authors of the project started in the laboratory, mechanical prototypes have to "learn" to mimic the natural movements of some natural organisms, as if it made a soft, flexible robots. A brilliant example of such a nature similar to the authors become flabby, seemingly completely amorphous octopus, capable to lift and carry items, swim, walk around, change the shape of the body in a wide range, skillfully penetrate through the incomparably finer holes, and even mimic the environment.

Exo-Biote - not just talent realized the fruit of enacted imagination. It's kind of smart "Lego" consisting of a set of elements capable of recreating certain motor functions. Assembling together the individual elements of such "designer" will create a soft robot with a fundamentally new possibilities of movement and communication.

In the final installation, provided the individual elements on the roller futuristic Lego switched wires to a control unit placed under the glass and live their lives, pulsate, rotate and move along a nonlinear path, involuntarily chaining themselves to the eye and causing sometimes contradictory feelings.

"These hybrid objects filled with air. They seem to live and breathe on their own. These components - parts of a whole, they belong to the body, whose behavior can be observed for the pulsation of its organs. Spazmicheskaya choreography involves the observer on a journey where objects appear to finished products, the bodies of mass production "- to share their thoughts Julien Giler.

It is known that up to 90% of members of the bodies of the vast majority of animal species on our planet - soft or flexible tissue, which, in all probability, is one of the basic principles of survival of the species. The solid material if an appropriate force is easily broken, and it is in such a state is a body incapable continue to adapt to a changing environment and, using the formal terminology in a state of "rigor mortis" or death.

Philosophy of life
Project Exo-Biote, authored by Jonathan Pepe and Julien Giler - the first step in translating their own philosophical views on existence and the prospect of coexistence between Homo Sapiens and his rational creatures.

"... With the development of technology, the computer and the human body come into increasingly close relationship. Thinking about the future and about the increasing proximity of man and machine, I imagined that perhaps the computers will not only hardware and software, but also structural changes. My hypothesis is that computers will be organic, become alive and being flexible. However, the question remains open: whether there will be a transition to such a vector of development of robotics in our lifetime? "- So says Jonathan Pepe himself.

The work was presented in France at the National Fresnoy studio of contemporary art in the exhibition - part of the Panorama 17.
