The Skolkovo develop nanotechnology for the treatment of atherosclerosis

Enterprise "Nanokor" resident of Skolkovo in Tomsk innovators will face research to develop a fundamentally new technology of treatment of atherosclerotic plaques in the blood vessels of a person using a bioactive nanoparticles. It is a joint project of physicians and chemists of the Research Institute of Cardiology and Tomsk Polytechnic University. It is well known that atherosclerosis - the cause of the highest mortality rates from cardiovascular diseases. Atherosclerotic plaque can form very long and wavy. Slow growth of plaque in the lumen of the blood vessel leads to the fact that many important organs begin to suffer from lack of oxygen. Sometimes isolated and small sized plaques ("lethal") may be placed across the container, which leads to quick coronary accident. Terms and conditions for the growth of a plaque in the arteries can be compared with the entire factory: in the human body as it has its own "pathological mini-conveyor", which gives its "mini-products" for the formation and growth of plaque. This daisy chain is very multidimensional and not fully aware of all the intricacies of this complex mechanism. Hence the idea to try to work on some of the links in the chain to terminate it, thereby stopping the growth of the entire body of an atherosclerotic plaque.

The technology is to break the atherosclerotic plaque in blood vessels by human bioactive nanoparticles. A year of experiments, scientists have determined the necessary nanoparticles, and their chemically empowered to modify, by attaching to nanoparticles chain radicals capable of reacting with the substance of the plaque. Followed by morphological work has shown that this material can penetrate the plaque itself and change its structure. Scientists have already filed a patent application. Residence in the "Skolkovo" will provide a grant for the completion of already started research work and as a result create development activities.
