In 1945, Kovner became the leader of the Jewish guerrilla group called «Nokmim» - Hebrew for "The Avengers", whose main goal was revenge.





First, they hunted down Nazis one by one. Posing as representatives of the authorities, they produced fake arrests, but "detainees" in prison cells did not fall: often "Avengers" broke into the homes of people who had previously worked in the death camps, and hang them in the garage, so that it looked like a suicide. "The Avengers" even entered the hospital where he lay Gestapo agent, and led him into a vein kerosene.

Kovner was not happy with the results, he believed in the principle of "an eye for an eye" and believed that the death of six million Germans will not be enough. Then, "The Avengers" developed a plan to poison water supplies in Munich, Berlin, Weimar, Nuremberg and Hamburg.



Kovner went to Israel and asked the future president Chaim Weizmann for help: There are rumors that he gave him the poison, but most Israeli leaders, fortunately, were horrified by the plan Kovner and gave it to the British government. On his return to Europe, Kovner was arrested, and the plan did not materialize.
