To Australian giant iceberg floats (4 photos)
Scientists have discovered a giant iceberg halfway between Antarctica and Australia.
It is noted that the fragment of the ice sheet will represent a significant danger to shipping in the region.
According to the researchers, from the ice blocks it took several years to swim to the region.
Currently iceberg height of 50 meters and a diameter of about 500 is located near the small island of Macquarie, located at a distance of 1,500 kilometers from the coast of Tasmania.
Scientists emphasize that the discovery of the iceberg as far north from the coast of Antarctica is quite an unusual event - the ice generally do not swim so far and melt down the road.
The researchers note that discovered the lump probably broke away from the Ross Ice Shelf between 2000 and 2002.
The largest iceberg has broken away from the coast of Antarctica, had fantastic dimensions: 300 km long and 37 km wide.
It is believed that the reason for such a distant icebergs swim is global warming, which leads to chipping of the Antarctic shield huge chunks. More recently, however, scientists have been able to establish that the rate of melting of ice in the region is significantly overvalued. The discovery was made after the re-analysis of data collected as part of the mission GRACE in 2006.
