A MAN who stopped the desert.
It is called the man who won the desert. Rather, he won a terrible harbinger of the desert - Sahel: kogda in a dry year disappears greens, trees are dying and the land turns into a crust from which next year for sure nothing grows. Sahel comes every year and last otvoёvyvaet fertile land.
Africans are struggling with this phenomenon using the ancient traditional technique Zai: dig wells in which rainwater is delayed (otherwise it simply spreads over the red-hot earthen scab and evaporates). But there was a time that even Zai did not help, and many families have emigrated to neighboring countries, which did not manage to get the Sahel.
Jacob did not go, and thoughtful. Yacouba Sawadogo did not leave, and began to address the problem. He did not come up with a new, but improved the old traditional methods: not just digging the hole, and put back the straw, manure and other organic fertilizers that longer delay moisture, thereby causing the arrival on the field termites that its moves would make the soil porous, friable, and thus able to hold more water and do it in advance, before sowing.
And it turned out that it was impossible, no one what had been thrown and strength and western humanitarian aid! At present Yakubu rose garden, then forest, then many acres of woods and fields.
Sawadogo Ouedraogo, along with Matthew, another experimenter and innovator, have made efforts to spread the technology throughout the region. Every two years, Sawadogo conducting "Market Days" on his farm in the village of Gurgen, in which buyers market share experiences and examples.
Characteristically, his opponents - tribal chiefs - Do not listen to the peasants Yakubu, as it is contrary to the traditions ...
Opponents of the innovations set fire to plantations Yakubu and he had to create everything from scratch. But he did not sdalsya.A then the government gave him a farm nearby town. And it started all over again.
He opposed the envious and reactionaries, the officials, the government and the seemingly Nature herself. But it just does matter.
Here is something to think about.
