The film is based on the autobiographical novel Ruly Gebre, who tells the story of a girl from East Jerusalem, faced with the harsh reality of war. Author of the novel finds that her novel tells the story of any one girl, and is a reflection of the lives of all women who find themselves in the midst of hostilities and, in particular, the unfortunate fate of little girls.

During the shooting of the film director Julian Schnabel encountered many problems concerning the release of the film, the representatives of the Jewish Committee in the United States banned the film, claiming that it is anti-Israel. But ultimately, Schnabel has achieved what he wanted, and the premiere of his film still held.
