Secret languages: how secret societies encrypted their messages

For centuries, there have been various secret societies around the world that sought to hide their rituals, symbols, and even ways of communicating from outsiders. One of the key tools for this was secret languages and ciphers.

Secret languages of Masons

Masonic code
One of the most famous examples of a secret language is the Masonic cipher. He used special symbols instead of the letters of the ordinary alphabet. Freemasons used this cipher to protect their rituals and ideology from the uninitiated.

Secret Illuminati Languages

Another known example of a secret language is the cipher used by members of the Illuminati. It was based on complex mathematical formulas and a symbolic system, which made it almost unopenable to outsiders.

Cryptography in Other Secret Societies

In addition to the Freemasons and Illuminati, secret languages and ciphers were used in other secret organizations, such as:

  • Knights Templar
  • Rosicrucians
  • Order of the Golden Dawn
  • Order of the Temple of the East

“Secret languages are not just a way of hiding information, but a means of creating cohesion and a sense of selectivity among members of secret societies.” Professor John Michael Gibson, cryptography expert

Decoding the secret languages

Despite all efforts, many secret languages and ciphers were eventually uncovered. This was made possible by the development of cryptography and cryptanalysis as scientific disciplines. Secret societies are vulnerable to advances in decryption.
