Reflections on why in the film “Moscow does not believe in tears” was Tosya, if the plot she did not influence
After the first viewing of the film “Moscow does not believe in tears”, the film fate of Katerina Tikhomirova gathered the most reviews of Soviet viewers. Then there's Lyudmila's flamboyant twig. And their friend, modest Tosya Buyanova, retreated to the margins as a secondary character. But what if we said that Tosya was the key character in the film masterpiece? Let's look at her role in history from a different angle.
The plot of the legendary picture of Vladimir Menshov “Moscow does not believe in tears” revealed the story of three friends. Each of them conquered Moscow in its own way.
Katya Tikhomirova, played by Vera Alentova, first failed the exams and went to work at the plant. Then she broke her heart, made a child, and a single mother had to combine the upbringing of her daughter with evening studies. As a result, Katya turned into Katerina Alexandrovna and hit the jackpot: she became the director of the chemical plant and a very wealthy lady. And then she found a husband.
GettyImages Her dorm roommate Lyuda Sviridova also worked at the factory. In the second series, she appeared before the viewer a dry cleaning worker. Irina Muravyeva was able to embody the image of an ambitious, bragging lady who dreamed of achieving a good life without much effort. Lyuda seized her happiness in the face of the famous athlete and divorced when her husband drank.
Modesty and simpleton Tosya Buyanova - Raisa Ryazanova - probably worked as a painter-plaster from the beginning to the end of the picture. She became friends with the girls by chance. The hostel brought together a variety of people. If the girls were older and met them elsewhere (at the university or in the company), it is unlikely that they would be so close friends. They were very different.
Is the character of Tosi Buyanova so simple? At first glance, Tosya was simple and understandable. Why was she put in the story? Because he was tied to her friends. She became just a background character for revealing the characters of Katya and Lyuda.
For example, Tosina’s wedding was necessary in order for Katya to inform the girls about her pregnancy. But we wouldn’t know that in this scene, but in another.
But its role goes deeper than it seems. Antonina is the salt of the earth, the people's shore, on which rest and order of this world is based. She lived all her life with one man in love and harmony, raised sons, worked on the most popular work. Her fate unfolded stably and safely.

She was honest and guileless, unlike Lyudmila. Tosya did not get into amorous troubles like Katya. The same clinged to the slippery and unnecessary Rudolph in her youth, and a dozen years later - to the married Volodya. And the scene with the Tosinas reveals its creative nature even more deeply.
Why do you think we were shown a scene twice in two episodes, where first the parents of Tosin’s groom, and then Tosina herself and her husband asked each other to give them bread and laughed at it? Did the director have enough film to shoot the episode twice?
Bread is the basis of foundations, a symbol of stability, home and family. So Tosya acted as an imperceptible but permanent foundation on which reliability is based. She doesn't go from extreme to extreme like her bright friends. The girl is stable, peaceful and unshakable.
Even when the friends went to the village for the sterns, Katya and Lucia walked in front. And the bride herself, for whom the whole event was started, quietly followed them. Nikolai's parents at first mistook a quivering Lyuda for the bride and frowned. But then they recognized that their girl is a modest Tosya. They immediately thawed: they recognized her as their own.
Menshov used the scenes with the dacha to give Lyudmila the voice of his principle: “To love – so the queen, to lose – so a million”. And so that the headmistress Katerina had a reason to sit in a suburban train. Where else could she have encountered Goga?
It turns out that it was thanks to Tose that the main storylines unfolded. Although she did not play an active role. I was just attracted.
"Moscow does not believe in tears": reviews of foreign audience The film received an Oscar in 1981 and largely thanks to the heroine Raisa Ryazanova. Of course, the jury did not mention this character as the key to understanding the film. Perhaps they did not attach much importance to its role.
But why did this picture get an international badge? It is a kind of guide to a certain period of life. We talked about the fate of women in a certain city. And the humble soulful Tosya seemed to hold together both the city and the period.
