The Life of George Danelia
Today, another talented figure of Soviet and Russian cinema has left this world. At the age of 88, after long health problems, a Russian film director and screenwriter flew to heaven. George Danelia. The life path of George Danelia began in sunny Tbilisi on August 25, 1930, but a year later his family moved to Moscow. George’s father, Nikolai Danelia, was an engineer, and his mother, Mary Anjaparidze, worked for Mosfilm. It was the mother who played a decisive role in the fate of Danelia, instilling in her son a love for cinema. His aunt and uncle were also artists of the USSR.

In the 50s, Georgy graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute and worked as an architect at the Institute of Urban Design. In 1959, Danelia graduated from the Higher Directing Courses at Mosfilm in the studio of Mikhail Kalatozov, after which he began working at the film studio as a director. At the directorial courses, Danelia shot 2 short films: the course “Vasisuali Lokhankin” and the diploma “The same people”.
His first full-length work was the film “Serezha” (1960) with Sergei Bondarchuk and Irina Skobtseva in the lead roles. The film adaptation of Vera Panova’s novel “Several Stories from the Life of a Very Little Boy” fell in love with Soviet viewers and allowed a new look at the relationship between children and parents. The film was awarded the Grand Prix at the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary.
Wide popularity came to Georgy Danelia in 1964, after the release of the lyrical comedy “I Walk Through Moscow”, which organically merged into the history of domestic cinema. Moreover, the ribbon became a cultural event of the Khrushchev thaw. After this picture, young actors Mikhalkov, Loktev, Polish, Steblov woke up famous.
In his next picture “Thirty-three” Danelia showed sharp satire and good humor. The work of Georgy Nikolaevich begins to be distinguished by deep satire and the disclosure of the psychological image of the heroes. The ability to create a well-coordinated ensemble of actors from different schools becomes a special feature of George as a director. Critics noted that all of Danelia’s films have excellent acting skills.
In the next 25 years, director Danelia directed 11 more films, three of which were included in the golden fund of Soviet cinema. These are the comedy Mimino (1977), the satirical comedy Autumn Marathon (1979) and the cult fantastic comedy Kin-dza-dza! (1986). Danelia was also the screenwriter of most of his films, as well as co-author of scripts for films shot by other directors, including “Gentlemen of Fortune”, “French”, “Hello from Charlie Trubatch”.
Georgy Nikolaevich Danelia was a People's Artist of the RSFSR and the USSR, laureate of the State Prize of the USSR, the Russian Federation, the Golden Aries Awards and the Triumph National Prize. The director has a huge number of prizes that were received at film festivals in Karlovy Vary, Venice, San Sebastiano, Moscow, Dushanbe, Gabrovo, Varna, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro... He also received an academic degree from the National Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
George Nikolayevich was married three times. The first wife was Irina Ginzburg. She gave birth to a daughter Svetlana. The second wife is actress Lyubov Sokolova, from whom the director has a son. The last wife is director Galina Yurkova.
George Danelia once said, “Life is not a script, you cannot rewrite it.” Too bad! Very sorry. That such a talented man has left us. He managed not only to capture the era in cinema, but to make it so that it became native, understandable and close to each viewer.
