Verification of ventilation in the apartment

Most of the autumn-spring period we spend in closed heated rooms.

In such conditions, the mucous membrane is dried, and the body's resistance to infections is significantly reduced.

And if the ventilation system does not cope with its duties, then to this you can add the constant presence of foreign smells, mustyness, dampness and mold in the corners.

How to check the ventilation with your own hands and what to do to resume the free flow of air? The answers are in our article.

How to check the ventilation
  1. Cut several strips of thin paper 20 cm long and 2-3 cm wide and alternately bring them to the ventilation grilles at a distance of 5-7 cm.

With normal ventilation, the ends of the strips should touch the edge of the outlet.

  2. If the paper strip is weakly attracted to the outlet, does not deviate at all or deviates in the opposite direction, then the ventilation is definitely bad, but you need to find out what the matter is.

The ventilation ducts may have clogged or No air flow into the apartment.

  3. Open the door and window, then repeat the experiment.

If this time the strip is attracted to the outlet - the ventilation shaft is fine.

Otherwise, you need to look for the cause of its malfunction.

  4. Specialists of the State Housing Inspectorate are armed with devices more precisely than paper strips and can accurately measure the speed of air movement in the ventilation channel, and then compare it with the normative one.

  5. The sequence of actions in this case is as follows: we measure the air velocity with an anemometer, calculate the area of the ventilation grille, substitute the values in the formula and find out the intensity of the air flow in cubic meters per hour.

    Formula for calculation: Q = V * S * 3600
    Q - volume of air cubic m/hour
    V = airflow rate in m/s
S is the cross-sectional area of the vent in square meters.

  6. The standard for a kitchen with an electric stove is 60 cubic meters / h, for a kitchen with a gas stove - 100 cubic meters / h, for a bathroom - 25 cubic meters / h.

Measurements should be made at a difference in temperature of indoor and outdoor air at least 13-15 degrees (for example, outside 7 degrees, and in the apartment 21 degrees).

Causes of lack of airflow
  1. In our apartment buildings, as a rule, supply and exhaust ventilation of the gravitational principle of action is arranged.

It works according to the laws of physics, air masses spontaneously enter the premises and stretch out through the exhaust channel.

  2. Its disadvantage is that initially it was designed to supply fresh air naturally through old wooden window and door structures due to the loose fit of the flaps, the presence of cracks.

By installing more sealed plastic windows, we block the flow of air and thereby turn the room into airtight. Traction in the ventilation ducts disappears and the air does not circulate. This is especially noticeable in winter, when the windows do not open even for airing, so as not to cool the rooms.

The problem is easy to solve. It is enough to put the window in the ventilation mode, and air will begin to enter the resulting gap. He will go around the apartment and reach the ventilation holes, which are usually located in the kitchen and bathroom.

  3. Inadequate ventilation is directly related to the problem of fogging windows.

Condensation on plastic windows signals an unhealthy microclimate in the apartment. Windows that do not “breathe” limit the flow of fresh and clean air, increasing the concentration of dust.

As a result, it becomes difficult to breathe, allergies, skin diseases and even asthma appear. Children begin to get sick, and adults complain of frequent ailments, headaches, deterioration of health.

  4. The solution to the problem can be a climate control valve on the windows or installing them in microventilation mode. The supply ventilation valve will provide the room with fresh air and remove excess moisture without noise and dust from the open windows.

Provide continuous ventilation in winter and prevent heat loss Allows supply and exhaust ventilation with an air recuperator. Until recently, such technology was used in Russia quite rarely, but today experts insist on its need.

The recuperator is not cheap and does not replace the heating system, but allows you to improve ventilation and reuse the heat for which we have already paid, and therefore get real savings in energy and money.

A simpler solution will be cleaning the ventilation ducts or installing a larger ventilation grille. You can also install a better kitchen hood or clean the existing one from contamination.

As soon as you find any deviations in the ventilation system, immediately take action. If you can’t do it yourself, invite specialists. Good luck, health and clean air!
