The Second Life of a Wheelchairman, or The Mysterious Bag in the Attic

A person’s second life can only begin if the first one comes to an end. Andrey had it when a foreign car ran over him in the middle of the pedestrian zone. The driver immediately disappeared, and Andrew forever lost the ability to walk. Now he is a wheelchair, and therefore without any prospects and opportunities. At least he thought so until he got to his grandfather's house.

The sad events of Andrew brought to the village, near the city where the accident occurred. He did not want to be in a densely populated place, and his relatives believed that it was useful for him to be in a calm atmosphere. Namely in the house of his grandfather, where Andrew used to spend the summer holidays.

Peels' first week in the stroller wasn't easy. Andrew, accustomed to a sedentary lifestyle, had to learn to work with his hands all the time. On the one hand, he was glad to be in a place where he always felt good. On the other hand, he already knew that he would never be able to live in it as before. And Grandpa's been gone for a long time.

Together with him remained his brother Artem. He took care of Andrew and maintained morale with all his might. Movies, games, books and fun conversations with friends on Skype. Despite all the efforts, it seemed that no care of the native could not calm the longing for the lost life. Andrew has lost all will and optimism. He wanted almost nothing. From time to time he became angry with powerlessness and unleashed his indignation on Artyom.

The good brother perfectly understood that Andrew’s anger is aimed not at him, but at life itself and its injustice. But living like this isn't an option. It was necessary to look for something, some business that would capture Andrei and make him forget about the harsh truth of reality.

One day Andrei and Artem decided to go through things in the attic. Artem climbed up and lowered boxes and bags on the floor next to Andrei. And he, in turn, went through all the trash.

In one of the bags, Andrei suddenly groped for wood tools: chimneys, hacksaws, hammers and many other means for processing the material. Once upon a time, my grandfather used them to do beautiful things. For example, cutting boards, paintings, figures. My mother and grandmother sold everything or gave it to their friends. They did not see the point in this work, but Andrei did not agree with it.

From that day began a new stage in the life of a sad wheelchair user. His grandfather’s hobby seemed to be inherited by his grandson, and he spent all his days studying the technique of woodworking. As a result, by the end of the month, Andrei was able to present a small figure of a bear. Of course, it came out ugly, but his passion and love for the cause caused much more joy than the figure itself.

Months later, Andrew adapted and began to make crafts to order neighbors. Then his work began to be posted on social networks, where customers were also located. Money, of course, was very small in conditions of constant need and skyrocketing prices. But it was better than nothing.

Artem was sincerely happy for Andrei, and Andrei was glad that he ceased to perceive himself as a ballast for society. Now he was not just a wagon, but also a master. And life goes on.
