Traditions on the Day of John Chrysostom

Every year on November 26, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Day of St. John Chrysostom – Archbishop of Constantinople, theologian and one of the three Ecumenical Hierarchs along with Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian. The last words of St. John, “Glory to God for everything!”, spoken in exile in terrible physical torment, became a real symbol of faith. We offer to remember how the saint lived, what John Chrysostom is famous for and how the day of his memory is celebrated today.

St. John Chrysostom From the day of John Chrysostom in Russia began the dumpling season. When severe frosts came, dumplings could be safely frozen and stored right on the street. Traditionally, the whole family gathered for their modeling, and sometimes several neighboring families. The fillings were completely different: meat, fish, vegetable, fruit. Ready dumplings were collected in bags and stored for a long time on the street.

It is believed that on Chrysostom winter asserts its rights. The people said: “The winter is called on John Chrysostom his retinue – blizzards and snowstorms – and gives them the order of the thaw to calm down.” From that day on, frosts became harsher, plants fell asleep, and animals hid in burrows. “The whole field is empty on Chrysostom,” the Christians said. Our ancestors also noticed that if crows cry on this day, it means that there is a thaw.

In Russia, they believed that frost is an evil deity called Zyuzya. Everything that Zyuzya touches with his staff instantly turns into ice. On the day of John Chrysostom, people asked Zyuzyu not to rage much, not to freeze the land and give the peasants rest and enjoy the winter days.

One of the prohibitions on this day says: “You cannot swear at Ivan, otherwise God will never hear prayers.”

“O great saint, John Chrysostom!” Many and various gifts from the Lord have received you, and as a good and faithful servant, all the talents given to you have multiplied you well, for this reason the universal teacher was you, for every age and every calling is taught from you. But we, sinners (names), by one gift of our possessions, the unity of the spirit in the union of the world, are not imams, but are vanity, irritating each other, envious of each other; for this sake of our gift, divided not into peace and salvation, but into hostility and condemnation we appear.

At the same time to you, the saint of God, we fall down, we are overcome with discord, and in the crushing of our hearts we ask: by your prayers, repel from our hearts all malice, ill-will, pride and envy, which divide us, that in many ways we will remain one church body without choice, that in the words of your prayer we will love each other and by the unanimity of our Father and Son and Holy Spirit, the Trinity of Oneness and Indivisible, now and in all ages and ages. Amen.

If the prayer is sincere and read before the face of the saint, it will surely be heard. Every prayer is an inexhaustible power! Especially strong is the 90th Psalm from the Psalm. This prayer is a talisman from diseases, disasters and many troubles. You need to learn it by heart and read it regularly.
