Traditions on the Day of the Three Saints
February 12, 2019 Christians celebrate a great holiday – the Day of the Three Saints. This bright day is dedicated to the memory of Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and Patriarch of Constantinople John Chrysostom. These saints are venerated as universal teachers who carried the word of God and completed the dogma of the Holy Trinity.

The history of the holiday begins in the era of the Byzantine emperor Alexei I Comnenus. Then in Constantinople there was a debate about who among the three great hierarchs was right and whose teachings were true. Each of the hierarchs seemed to his followers to be the best, which caused church discord.
Some called themselves Basilians, others Gregorians, and still others Johnites. There was no end to these contradictions. The longer this went on, the more people took sides, and the bickering continued.
According to church belief, in 1084 Metropolitan John Mavropod appeared three hierarchs and said in one voice: “Tell our flock that we are all the same with God, we have no rivalry.” Each of us, possessing one or another grace of the Holy Spirit, did what was necessary for the salvation of people. We don't have a first, second, third. If the name of one saint is invoked in prayer, two others are also present.”
The hierarchs ordered the metropolitan to stop the schism of the church and unite people, appointing one feast for all three. They said that if people worshipped them one day and offered equal prayer to each of them, they would ask the Lord for salvation at once.
Metropolitan John composed a service in memory of the saints. Since then, their memory is honored in one day, offering prayers to everyone. Saints Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom are known to every believer as great theologians and fathers of the Church. The life of each of them is an example for any Christian.
Their memory is still honored, and their statements have become a postulate for many Christians. Over time, the holiday of the three saints was filled with special folk traditions and prohibitions, which we will talk about today.
In the people, this day is also called the feast of family holiness. The fact is that all three saints were believers, as were their families. They raised their children in love and respect for their faith. That is why on this day it is customary not only to remember the saints, but also to think about how you raise children and family values.
There are also strict prohibitions that have become an integral part of this holiday over the years. Let's find out what those prohibitions are.
In fact, these prohibitions are not so many, but there is one that in no case can not be violated. The saints are angry with people who start quarrels and argue, so on this day you can not be angry, jealous and shout. Especially under the prohibition of quarrels in the family.
It is believed that on this day you need to reconcile with the one with whom you are in a quarrel, otherwise you will be at odds for a year. This is a day that reconciled many, so we need to forget about differences and reconcile.
Our ancestors believed that if you put old shoes out of the door on this day, you can avoid quarrels in the family for the whole next year. They say that on this day it would be good for men to do homework, everything will work out well. All future plans planned for this holiday are also being implemented.
On this day, our ancestors determined the weather and harvest for the next year.
This is the holiday we celebrate on February 12. Signs of signs, and most importantly on this day do not forget to pray, go to church and spend the day calmly and without quarrels. Have a good holiday!
Very soon we will celebrate the bright spring holiday of Maslenitsa. Find out what not to do during the week.

- Singing snowmen - to snowfall and thaw.
- If the north wind blows and the sky is clear, there will be severe frost.
- If it rings in the right ear, it is soon warm, and in the left - to the cold.
- Crows roar loudly - to the blizzard.
- If the trees are covered with frost, it will soon be warm.
