When you can start planting seedlings

Very soon spring will come, the snow that is tired of everyone will melt and the summer season will begin. But why wait so long? Since the end of February, gardeners and gardeners can begin to plant seedlings.

And do it without leaving the apartment, on your windowsill. First of all, you should decide what you plan to grow, then get seeds, soil and containers for planting.

"Site" gardener seed calendar for March 2019The most favorable days for planting and general recommendations for the care of seedlings of common vegetable crops.

When deciding on sowing seedlings, it should be borne in mind that the optimal planting period of the same crop may differ significantly depending on a number of conditions.

  1. Duration of the growing season
By seedling method, as a rule, we grow those plants in which a long period passes from the moment of emergence of seedlings to the full formation of the plant and which otherwise simply do not have time to give crops in our latitudes. The exact duration of the growing season is usually indicated on bags with seeds, but for a guide you can remember the average indicators: tomatoes - 80-140 days, sweet pepper - 90-140 days, eggplant - 100-150 days, cabbage - from 50 to 190 days.

As you can see, the difference between early ripe and late ripe varieties is very noticeable, so the seeds of late ripe tomatoes are sown already in February, and the early ones are sown in March-April.

  2. Optimum seedling age
For dive and landing in the ground, each culture has its own optimal age, in which plants take root faster and get less sick. Therefore, it is necessary in this way to choose the time of sowing seedlings, so that by the time of planting in the ground the plants reach the most suitable age. And it is better to plant a slightly undergrown seedling. Overgrown seedlings are more difficult to tolerate transplantation, take root much worse, more susceptible to diseases in the process of adaptation. This is one of the reasons why the timing of sowing seeds for seedlings should be calculated individually.

Experts recommend the following values of seedling age: for early tomatoes - 40-50 days, medium-ripe - 55-60 days, late tomatoes - 70 days, eggplant - 45-60 days, sweet pepper - 50-65 days.

  3. Plant heat requirements
All vegetables that we grow by seedling method (except for cabbage) are very thermophilic, so the period of their planting should be correlated with the likelihood of late frosts. No one will name the exact dates here, especially since the weather has recently become less predictable: it rains in winter, then snow in May. But it is still worth considering this factor.

To more or less accurately determine when to sow seedlings, for example, medium-ripe tomatoes, find out the timing of the end of spring frosts in your region. Then subtract 55-60 days from this date - this will be the landing date.

  4. Conditions of cultivation
Planting plants in greenhouses and in open ground varies significantly in terms of time. So, to plant seedlings of tomatoes in greenhouses in the suburbs can be from the beginning of May, and in the open ground - only from the first decade of June, when all possible frosts will remain behind.

  5. Seed germination period
In some vegetable crops, the period from sowing to the appearance of seedlings can be up to 15 days. For tomatoes it is an average of 4-6 days, for sweet pepper - 14-18 days, eggplant - 7-14 days. It is also worth considering that the period of germination of seeds depends on both their quality and the conditions created by you: soil temperature, humidity, depth of planting seeds.

Planting calendar – 2019 Another factor that is often taken into account by experienced summer residents and farmers is the location of the moon. There is a law: on the day of the full moon and the two days closest to it, never plant anything. In the new moon and the days closest to it, you can not plant "roots", and for planting "tops" this is the most favorable time.

Sufficiently accurate seedling dates can be calculated only on the basis of individual parameters and weather forecast, but in average form for the central region of Russia it will be the following.

Seed sowing dates
  1. Eggplant
Eggplant seedlings can be sown from the end of February. Successful dates according to the lunar calendar are March 4, 5, 10, 12 and 16. Eggplants love heat, so you need to germinate them at a temperature of 25 to 30 degrees. The seeds usually germinate in 7-14 days.

  2. celery
Celery seedlings are recommended to sow starting from February 20. Seedlings should stay at home for at least 70 days, and seedlings can be transplanted into beds in late May. Favorable days for sowing root celery - March 24 and 25, for leaf celery - March 9 and 11.

  3. Sweet pepper
Sweet pepper seeds grow very long, from two to three weeks. And temperature-stricken. Just like eggplant, they need a temperature of 25 to 30 degrees. You can start sowing seedlings of sweet pepper from the end of February. Favorable days for sowing are March 4, 7, 12 and 15.

  4. Tomatoes
Growing seedlings of tomatoes on the windowsill involves the creation of the following conditions for seedlings: a large amount of light (it is better if the windows go south), high humidity (you need to spray the seedlings 2 times a day), temperature from 18 to 25 degrees. Sowing tomato seeds for seedlings It is recommended to start about 55-65 days before landing in the ground, or between February and the first days of April. Successful dates are March 10, 11, 15 and 16.

  5. Cucumbers
Seedlings of cucumbers are planted in open ground or a greenhouse at the age of 3-4 weeks. Our climatic conditions allow planting cucumber seedlings in the greenhouse, as a rule, after April 20, therefore, seeds for seedlings should be sown from March 20 to March 30. In open ground without shelter, seedlings of cucumbers are planted after June 10. So, seeds for seedlings should be sown from about 10 to 15 May. Favorable days according to the lunar calendar for sowing cucumber seedlings will be 7, 11, 15 and 16 March.

  6. Cabbage
It is recommended to add a little ash to the ground, which will help prevent the appearance of cabbage disease - black leg. Early white cabbage varieties can be sown from March 10. Broccoli and colored since mid-March. In March, favorable days for sowing seedlings will be 7, 12 and 15 March.
