Biofuel from organic waste

In Spain, Aqualia company engaged in water economy, and the automaker SEAT launched a joint project Life Metha-morphosis, aimed at creating biofuel from organic waste processed, which can be used to fuel vehicles. According to estimates, the CO2 emissions of vehicles on this biofuel will be reduced by 80 percent.

The program is built around the production of biomethane from organic waste contained in the wastewater. This technology is already being used for heating homes. Life Metha-morphosis, as well as other similar projects, is going to produce biomethane using bacteria that will produce gas in anaerobic digestion process of organic substances.

The system of biomethane production will consist of several parts. The Umbrella apparatus will be installed at the wastewater treatment plant in Barcelona, he will collect organic waste. In an anaerobic membrane bioreactor AnMBR will be the process of separation of gas from solid waste. Then, from the resulting mixture of gases apparatus Annamox ELAN will remove nitrogen and clean the remaining biomethane for use in vehicles.

SEAT is, in turn, will release the truck Methagro specifically for the transport of biomethane from purification stations at gas stations.

The company Aqualia say that their small businesses will handle about 10 000 cubic meters of wastewater per day and to produce about 1000 cubic meters of biomethane. This amount of fuel is enough to travel 150 cars over a distance of 100 kilometers. published
