13-year-old girl created a piezoelectric wind generator for $5
Maanasa Mendo (Maanasa Mendu), 13-year-old girl from Ohio, recently became the winner of the competition of young researchers Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, creating a device to measure the net energy value of only $5. Innovative design, dubbed "Harvest" (HARVEST), converts sunlight, wind and rain in renewable energy. Maanasa Mendu was the Best young scientists of America and received an award of $25 000.
Impressions from a trip to India, where she saw people living without electricity and clean water, pushed her to the development of affordable devices that generate renewable energy. She first proposed a piezoelectric wind power generating device, which made her a finalist in the competition Young Scientist Challenge this year. She then participated in the mentoring program during the summer with nine other finalists to create their own device, won the prize.
HARVEST consists of the "sun leaves", inspired by the plants and elements of the component piezoelectric material that generates electric currents when exposed to vibrations, so the device can collect energy in any weather.
She is now working on improving the technology for commercial distribution. Contest Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge was first held in 2008. Other finalists 2016 worked on such projects as the collection of energy from metabolic bacteria or production of bioplastics and biodiesel from oil seeds, pumpkin seeds. published
