The majestic and rugged building towering over the Danube, at 85 meters altitude, take on one of the hills of the Slovak capital. The first people came to this place in Neolithic times. Much later then tried to consolidate the Celts, later the Roman Empire built on the site of modern Bratislava Castle is a large border Outpost. Slavs appear here closer to the VIII century (Nitra Principality) and erected a small fortress. Later it passed into the possession of great Moravia. Finally, in the XI century, after the defeat of the great Moravia in the war against the young Hungarian Kingdom, the Slavic fortress on the Danube becomes the property of the winners and begins to rebuild in the likeness of the feudal castles of that time.
The beginning of the flourishing of the Castle laid in the XV century the king of Hungary Sigismund of Luxembourg, ordered to combine the already existing fortifications of the Castle with a new square building (the same one that we see today, however, much rebuilt). Then there were the outdoor patio. In 1550-ies architect Pietro Ferrabosco, famous for the reconstruction of the Vienna Hofburg, rebuilds the Castle of the Gothic castle into a Renaissance Royal residence. In 1563г. city Prespork (now Bratislava) on two long century is the coronation town of the Hungarian Kingdom, and the Castle – a Royal residence. Large South-West tower of the Castle turns into the repository of the crown jewels (the Treasury, to put it simply).
If you arrive in Bratislava, be sure to climb to Bratislava Castle. From his top bunk to beautiful views on the Danube and the city. And just to give homage to the fortress with an amazing destiny – having donned several centuries all styles of medieval Europe (from Gothic to Baroque and Rococo), successfully withstood the siege of numerous armies (the Tatars in 1241г., the French in 1805 and 1809гг.), after spending 150 years in ruins, and rising like a Phoenix from the ashes – harsh stone structure is now again rises above the cozy Bratislava, as an honored soldier, a veteran in the endless watch --
