Slovakia - the only country in the EU, where there is no mosque
In Slovakia, Islam is not a recognized and registered by the state religion

BRATISLAVA. Slovakia still remains the only EU country that does not have in its territory of any mosque, writes The Slovak spectator.

According to the Islamic Foundation in Slovakia, live in the country from 4 to 5 thousand. Muslims. The exact number of Muslims can not be determined, because Islam is not a recognized and registered by the state religion. Some Muslims in Slovakia, arrived here from Islamic countries during the time of Czechoslovakia, some immigrated to the last 10-20 years.

The founder of the Islamic Foundation in Bratislava Mohamad Hasna, who arrived in Bratislava in 1991 from Syria, considers it unfair that in Slovakia there is still no single mosque. According to him, the fund has repeatedly appealed to the authorities of Bratislava to allow construction, but has always been refused.

He said the Islamic community of Bratislava, publishes a newspaper, organizes courses on Islam, helping the poor. The bulk of the community members are from Albania, Bosnia and Arabs.

The main objective of the fund at the moment is the recognition of Islam, the official religion. In 2007, the Slovak Parliament adopted a law under which to register the religious movement must have 20,000 followers.

In the neighboring Czech Republic for the registration of religious communities is enough 300 members, so the country has more than 34,000 religious associations. In Slovakia, as at the moment there are 18 recognized religions, of which 5 were formed automatically after the declaration of independence of the state.

According to the Center for Research ethnicities and cultures, more than 70% of inhabitants of Slovakia opposed in principle to the existence of Islam in the country, and even against allowing Muslims to practice their religion and build Islamic centers.

According to Jan Podmanitskogo, a deputy from the party Smer and one of the authors of the law, "The Constitution guarantees the right of Muslims to freedom of religion, but Slovakia is not obliged to provide government support and funding of religion, which is not popular among the population and is our country's non-traditional religions" .
