Turkish landmarks: the stone heads on mount Nemrut

Turkey – Mediterranean sea and comfortable hotels... This country, hot sun and amazing archaeological sites. One of them – the reliefs on mount Nemrut, the remains of the destroyed temple, which presumably is the tomb of king Antiochus I.

Today on the site of an ancient temple — the remains of bas-reliefs. Presumably, the tomb of Antiochus I was surrounded by giant statues of the gods Apollo, Zeus, Hercules, Antioch, and animals and birds– lions and eagles. The statue stood with its height of around 25 — 30m. "Stone head," extant, indicate that statues of the gods were specifically destroyed in the period of iconoclasm.

Amazing "open air Museum" was first discovered by the crusaders, besides the mention of Nemrut-Dag is preserved and the Catholic Chronicles.

Today this mountain, along with the historic region of Cappadocia is one of the main tourist sites. The best time to visit is from mid-may to mid-October. A favorite pastime of travelers to watch the sunrise and the sunset in the area when the ruins of the destroyed temple of light the rays of the sun.
