Turtle farm

Over the millennia, sea turtles have been part of the ecosystem reef zone of the South-West coast of Sri Lanka. Each year, deferred along the coast of the eggs hatched over a million baby turtles to replenish the populations of five species of sea turtles living off the coast of Sri Lanka. Turtle farm "Sea Turtle Farm & Hatchery" is a non-profit organization.


The main objective of the farm is the conservation of sea turtles for the next generation. The work of the centre was started in 1986. This time it was released into the ocean more than 500,000 sea turtles. As a result of rampant destruction of man, the number of turtles in recent decades has decreased to a critical level.


Currently, turtles are protected by the state. One of the centres for the rehabilitation of turtles is located in the town of Kosgoda. Visiting the tortoise centre in Kosgoda, you can see the newly hatched young turtles.


There are adult turtles have suffered from human activities and from domestic animals, have no possibility of independent existence in the natural environment. These turtles are found in special tanks in the case of a full recovery are released into the ocean.In addition, different kinds of sea turtles live in the pool as exhibits. They will also be released into the ocean in 4 to 5 years.
