"A blessed land"- Sri Lanka

The area of the island is 65 610 km2. The highest point is pidurutalagala,2524 m.


The island of Sri Lanka located in South Asia, just East of the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent and is washed by the waters of the Indian ocean and Bay of Bengal. Separated from the Indian subcontinent the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Strait. The so-called Adams bridge shoal in Palk Strait — once fully connected Sri Lanka to the mainland, but, according to the Chronicles, was destroyed by an earthquake около1481 G.


Sri Lanka is a very diverse flora and fauna. Of the 450 bird species in the island of, 251 species are constant and its inhabitants. Of these, 24 are found only in Sri Lanka. Migratory birds come to the island for the winter from Siberia, Europe, and Scandinavia.


In reservoirs of Sri Lanka, there are 50 species of freshwater fish, of which 17 were brought by the British in the nineteenth century. Out of the 38 unique amphibians 16. The island abounds in reptiles (75 species) including two species of crocodile: the water monitor and the Komodo dragon is the largest. The star tortoise is the only tortoise on the island. Five species of sea turtles are now protected by law. Of the 83 species of snakes, only 5 are poisonous.


Sri Lanka — the wonderful island of eternal summer, romance and exotic, where the rustle of coconut palms, the wonderful place to relax and unwind from the mundane, boring routine and the familiarity of the Western way of life. Once known as Ceylon, the island is covered with lush vegetation. On its territory there are no hazardous industries, and a large number of national parks have preserved the unique nature of Sri Lanka in its original form.


According to the legends Sri Lanka is considered the place where Adam and eve first set foot on the earth, and the great Gautama Buddha had freed the island from the demons here still kept his tooth and the "tree of enlightenment". But besides legends, in Lanka there is a lot of monuments protected by the UNESCO as world heritage.
