Miracle fountain of Charybdis

According to Greek mythology, the Sicilian sea lived two mermaids, Charybdis and Scylla. Homer tells us that after Charybdis stole the oxen of Hercules, Zeus struck her with lightning. The result was a big swirl, a vortex which has swallowed up many ships.

This story was inspired by William Pye to create their miracle fountain called Charybdis. In this funnel the water moves round in a transparent acrylic cylinder forms an air vortex in the center of the maelstrom. Around the crater are arranged in steps that allow viewers to consider the vortex with the different parties and regulations. The cylinder was built in Grand junction, Colorado.

After completion of Charybdis became the largest aerial sculpture-funnel, extending a sculptural language of the author and allowing him to explore more creative ways, challenging this wayward element of water. There is also a very important high level of water filtration to provide exceptional transparency and thus to demonstrate the drama of the vortex.

The sculpture was completed in 2000 specifically for the hotel Siham Hall in County Durham, UK.
